In Hindu tradition, Pitru Paksha is regarded as one of the most sacred periods of the year. This fortnight is dedicated to remembering and honoring our ancestors. According to scriptures, during this time the ancestors descend from Pitrlok to Earth. Families perform rituals such as Tarpan, Pind Daan, and Shraddha to offer peace to their departed souls. It is believed that when these rituals are carried out with devotion, the ancestors shower their blessings on the family, bringing prosperity, harmony, and protection.
This year, Pitru Paksha will begin on 7th September 2025 and end on 21st September 2025. Since auspicious activities such as weddings, housewarmings, or new purchases are prohibited during this period, the time before its beginning becomes extremely crucial. If you have any significant tasks or ceremonies pending, it is important to complete them before Pitru Paksha starts; otherwise, you will have to wait until it concludes.
The Spiritual Importance of Pitru Paksha
Pitru Paksha, also known as Shraddha Paksha, lasts for sixteen days in the Hindu lunar calendar. It is believed that during these days, offerings made to the ancestors reach them directly and help bring peace to their souls. Performing rituals like Shraddha, Tarpan, and Pind Daan during this time not only frees the ancestors from unfulfilled desires but also helps descendants overcome difficulties caused by Pitru Dosha.
If the rituals are ignored or not performed sincerely, scriptures state that families may face challenges in career growth, financial stability, family harmony, and even in aspects like marriage and childbirth. Conversely, when these rites are carried out with devotion, the ancestors bless their lineage, ensuring peace and prosperity for generations.
Key Dates of Pitru Paksha 2025
This year, Pitru Paksha starts on 7th September 2025 and will end on 21st September 2025. The concluding day, known as Mahalaya Amavasya, is considered the most powerful and spiritually significant day to perform Shraddha rituals. Since the fortnight is entirely dedicated to ancestor worship, it is vital to complete any auspicious tasks before the beginning of this sacred period.
Important Tasks to Complete Before Pitru Paksha
If you are planning a marriage, engagement, or housewarming ceremony, it should be completed before Pitru Paksha begins. Once the fortnight starts, these joyous and auspicious events are considered inappropriate. Even baby showers and naming ceremonies should ideally be carried out beforehand to avoid any delay.
Purchases also hold great importance during this time. Buying a new house, property, vehicle, or even jewelry is strictly avoided in Pitru Paksha. Many families even refrain from purchasing new clothes or major household items. Therefore, if you have been planning such purchases, it is advisable to complete them before 7th September. Otherwise, you will have to wait until the fortnight is over.
Business owners and families involved in financial dealings are also encouraged to finalize important contracts, investments, and property registrations before Pitru Paksha. Traditionally, business transactions are delayed during these days as a mark of respect to the ancestors.
Along with this, one should also prepare for the rituals themselves. Collecting the necessary items or samagri for Shraddha and Pind Daan ensures that the ceremonies can be conducted smoothly once Pitru Paksha begins. Those with Pitru Dosha in their horoscope must also plan remedies in advance, which usually include performing Pind Daan in the name of their ancestors, along with sincere prayers seeking forgiveness.
Finally, this period also reminds us to seek blessings and forgiveness in our personal lives. Pitru Paksha is not just about external rituals but also about introspection and humility. Taking time to remember the values of our forefathers, expressing gratitude, and resolving to live a life guided by ethics and respect is a powerful way to honor them.
What to Avoid During Pitru Paksha
During Pitru Paksha, auspicious activities are suspended. No new beginnings should be undertaken—weddings, engagements, housewarmings, and naming ceremonies are postponed. Purchases such as cars, gold, land, or even new clothes are considered inauspicious and should be avoided.
Similarly, personal grooming practices like haircuts or shaving are refrained from during this time, as they are seen as disrespectful to the departed. Joyous celebrations or festivals are also kept aside so that the focus remains entirely on remembrance and rituals dedicated to ancestors.
Why This Year’s Pitru Paksha Matters
Pitru Paksha 2025 begins on 7th September, which means there are only a few days left to complete pending auspicious tasks. For those who are planning marriages, property purchases, or business launches, this is the final window before a two-week pause. If these tasks are not finished in time, they will have to be postponed until after 21st September.
This urgency makes it especially important to act now. Completing these responsibilities before Pitru Paksha ensures that the sacred fortnight can be observed with a clear mind, free from the pressure of unfinished obligations. It also allows families to fully focus on rituals, offerings, and prayers that bring blessings from their ancestors.
Conclusion
Pitru Paksha is not merely a religious formality—it is a sacred duty of gratitude towards our ancestors. While the fortnight itself is devoted to rituals for departed souls, the days leading up to it hold their own importance. Completing auspicious tasks beforehand ensures that families respect tradition while also avoiding unnecessary delays in their personal and professional lives.
As Pitru Paksha 2025 approaches, with only a short time left before it begins, now is the moment to finalize ceremonies, purchases, and major commitments. Once the period starts, dedicate yourself wholeheartedly to remembering your ancestors, performing Shraddha, Pind Daan, and Tarpan, and seeking their eternal blessings. In doing so, you not only bring peace to their souls but also open the doors to prosperity and harmony for your entire lineage.
